Approximately 10 million pets are lost each year in the US.  Millions of those pets end up in animal shelters and tragically many will be euthanized if they can’t be identified.  The best and most reliable way to prevent the heartbreak of a lost pet and to ensure that your pet is safely returned home, is to have your pet microchipped. A microchip a small chip that is the size of a grain of rice and carries an id number that can be scanned to identify a lost pet.  The chip is insterted under the skin between the shoulder blades using a large needle.  The procedure only takes a few seconds and is surprisingly painless.  Microchip implantation can be done safely along with all other services performed at your wellness care visit.

One of the best ways to detect  abnormalities or underlying illnesses in your pet is to perform screening bloodwork every year.  Basic blood testing will check for common diseases such as diabetes, kidney, liver and Thyroid disease and will screen for any blood cell abnormalities.  Early detection and intervention are essential to maintain health and improve outcomes.  Specific tests will be tailored to your pets age and any symptoms they may be having.

A fecal examination will test for internal parasites such as roundworms, hookworms, giardia, whipworms, coccidia and more.  Most of these parasites are spread through feces but puppies and kittens can be born with them or can be infected through their mothers milk.  Because some of these parasites are transmissible to humans, it is important to run a fecal to ensure that your pet is parasite free!

Heartworm is a deadly disease that is spread by mosquitos and is extremely prevalent in North and South Carolina.  It is essential to test for Heartworm disease once a year to detect cases that are not yet symptomatic.  This ensures that asymptomatic pets do not spread the disease and that positive cases can be treated immediately to give patients the best possible chance at survival.

Ehrlichia and Lyme are tick-borne diseases that can cause significant and at times chronic illness.  All three diseases are tested with a single in-home blood test that requires 3 drops of blood.  Results take 10 minutes to come back.

Not only is Heartworm Disease itself deadly, but the treatment for heartworm disease can also be extremely dangerous and can cost thousands of dollars.  The great news is that Heartworm is completely preventable with appropriate prevention.  Thankfully there is now an option to prevent Heartworm disease without having to remember to give a pill every month!  Proheart 12 is a safe and effective prevention that will protect your pet against heartworm for a full year with only one injection!!

Fleas can not only infect your pet, they can also infest your home and even bite you!  Both fleas and ticks suck blood and can carry diseases in their saliva that can cause illness.  It is essential to protect your pet against these common parasites with a monthly oral or topical prevention.
